THE ROYAL ONTARIO MUSEUM IN ASSOCIATION WITH
ELIZABETH MASON PRESENT AN EVENING OF COUTURE GLAMOUR IN
CHANEL, DIOR & BALENCIAGA: FABULOUS 50'S FLASHFORWARD'

HOLLYWOOD'S "PAPER BAG PRINCESS" WARMS UP TORONTO
WITH THE HOTTEST IN VINTAGE COUTURE THIS SPRING

TORONTO, Ontario, February 27, 2003: The sophisticated elegance of 1950's couture graces the halls of the Royal Ontario Museum during 'Chanel, Dior & Balenciaga: Fabulous 50's Flashforward,' a special, one-night vintage fashion show to be held Thursday, March 27, 2003, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Hosted by vintage fashion celebrity and author Elizabeth Mason, the evening will feature some of the most elegant and luxurious designs of the decade chosen from her collection. One of North America's leading vintage couture experts and owner of The Paper Bag Princess boutiques in Toronto, Canada and Los Angeles, Mason will be available to sign copies of her book, "Valuable Vintage" available from Random House publishing.

Notes Mason, "Hollywood celebrity has long tapped into the enduring appeal and undeniable sophistication of fashions from the past. Good design is timeless, with many of today's most stylish celebrities embracing that notion wholeheartedly."

A unique celebration of the styles and fashion that lent an era its unmistakable glamour, 'Chanel, Dior & Balenciaga: Fabulous 50's Flashforward' took its inspiration from the current ROM exhibit Elite Elegance: Couture Fashion in the 1950s. For one extraordinary evening, the ROM's Currelly Gallery will be transformed into an elegant catwalk for the presentation of these highly coveted fashions. The collection will be beautifully augmented with vintage jewelry from Carole Tanenbaum's collection as well as jewelry specifically designed for the occasion in the style of the 1950's by the Georgian College jewelry graduates. Also included in the presentation will be two 50's couture ensembles, reminiscent of the period and designed and created by Ryerson University Fashion graduates.

Internationally renowned make-up experts M.A.C. will provide the make-up services while the models hair will be styled by John Steinberg and Associates. Adding to the ambience of the event will be the Chet Valiant Combo, who will set the mood with the performance of 50's swing music both before and after the show.

Hollywood Glamour Comes to The
Harbourfront Antique Market

Friday, August 30, 2002 (Toronto) ‚ Style and sophistication are two words that come to mind when thinking about Hollywood during the 1930s and 1940s. Picture Jean Harlow, Marlene Dietrich or Joan Crawford in their long, flowing gowns and sophisticated formal wear. What woman wouldn't feel like a star at a night out at Roy Thompson Hall dressed like Rita Hayworth? The Harbourfront Antique Market (HFAM) is proud to host Hollywood Comes to Harbourfront ‚ a vintage Hollywood glamour apparel and jewellery event on Saturday, October 26, 2002. The fashion show will take to the stage at 2pm and presented by Elizabeth Mason, owner of The Paper Bag Princess and one of North America's leading vintage clothing experts. The show will be followed by a vintage clothing ID Clinic at 3pm at the HFAM. Admission is free for both.

"I went to my first penny sale when I was seven," says Elizabeth Mason. It was as a young girl in Toronto that Mason found a love for bargain hunting and second-hand shopping. This passion turned into a business when Mason, also a former model and actress, opened The Paper Bag Princess in West Hollywood, California. Frequented by many Hollywood stars, including Julia Roberts, Winona Ryder, Nicole Kidman and Madonna, the boutique became so successful and so popular across North America that Mason has recently opened a second store in her native Toronto. Mason is the author of two vintage clothing books complete with the secrets to finding authentic vintage clothing and how to recognize clothing from the well-known designers of the time. This spring she launched her most recent book "Valuable Vintage, The Insider's Guide to Pricing and Collecting Important Vintage Fashions". And what outfit would be complete without stunning jewellery and accessories? The Harbourfront Antique Market will showcase a striking selection of jewellery and accessories from its own merchants. The HFAM is an invaluable source for gems from around the world, including estate jewellery, vintage costume curios, wedding rings and one-of-a-kind pieces.

You Paid How Much?
Let The Paper Bag Princess Tell You the Insider's
Guide to Pricing and Collecting Important Vintage Fashions!

ImageCollecting vintage couture and designer-made clothing is the strongest, most rapidly growing trend in antiques and in contemporary fashion. Determining the value of a vintage garment is as vital as getting the facts on a particular stock prior to investment. Elizabeth Mason, owner of The Paper Bag Princess in Los Angeles—a favorite shopping haunt for Hollywood's hottest celebrities, such as Madonna, Nicole Kidman, and Rene Zellweger—has shared her expertise of couture collecting in Valuable Vintage (Three Rivers Press, April 2002), a complete sourcebook to the exciting and extravagant world of collecting twentieth and twenty-first century fashion from haute couture to current trends.

This quintessential guidebook shows avid collectors and fashion mavens alike the varieties and possibilities of vintage fashion. Valuable Vintage examines current trends in vintage couture clothing and forecasts the future of this emerging market. In addition, this guide provides more than 500 of the most influential and collectible designers from 1860 to the present, including recognizable names like Coco Chanel and Emilio Pucci, as well as newer favorites like Rei Kawakubo and Vivienne Westwood.

Collectors will also learn:

  • How to identify important vintage clothing and specific designs at a glance
  • The best sources for buying and selling vintage clothing worldwide, including boutiques, major auction houses, flea markets, and the Internet
  • Advice on when to buy and sell valuable pieces
  • The current prices of important designer vintage clothing based on actual realized prices at auction and important vintage couture boutiques throughout North America and Europe
  • Techniques of "persuasive bartering"—the art of getting a deal; and how to research the provenance of the garment
  • Proven ways to clean, restore, preserve, and even redesign vintage garments

If vintage couture collecting has become the new religion among the fashionistas, then Valuable Vintage is the new bible!
